Windle International Uganda

Established in 1996, WIU aims to promote peace and development in communities across the country by providing access to quality education to refugee and host communities. As trusted partners of the Ugandan government and organisations like the UNHCR, WIU operates programmes at all levels of education, from early childhood development through post-graduate and vocational training. Headquartered in Kampala, WIU employs over 2,500 humanitarian workers across 11 refugee settlements in Uganda.

WIU Overview

  • WIU supports and manages 288 education institutions nationally (97 ECD centres, 162 Primary, 27 Secondary, 1 Vocational Training Centre (VTC), and 1 Community Technology Access (CTA) centre). This includes setting up temporary and permanent learning spaces, providing teaching and learning materials, recruitment, remuneration and general management of school personnel. Windle also provides on-going professional development and on-the-job training for teachers. The teachers get training on teaching techniques, pedagogy, classroom management, and get psycho-social support through workshops, coaching, and mentoring.

  • WIU provides scholarships to vulnerable and marginalized students, including refugees, to support their education through primary, secondary, and tertiary levels of education. Some of the scholarship programmes include; primary school scholarships for children with special needs, secondary school scholarships for orphans and other vulnerable children, vocational scholarships and teacher training, the Albert Einstein Academic Refugee Initiative (DAFI) University Scholarship Programme, Student Refugee Program (SRP), James Aryam Scholarship Programme, the University of Kisubi Female Refugee Scholarship (UNIK Scholarship) and Windle - UK Master’s programme.

  • WIU operates a large network of Vocational Training Centres (VTC) which offer training for disciplines such as motor vehicle construction, ICT, electrical engineering, and building and construction. Learners are educated on business skills and provided with start-up kits to enable them to create their own enterprises.

  • Through support of various partners, including UNHCR, UNICEF, Education Cannot Wait, and Brightwell Supporting Refugees, WIU continues to build classrooms, auxiliary buildings, latrine stances and laboratories. Building these physical structures is a major key to providing optimal learning environment for the communities WIU supports. WIU has championed innovative and low cost school infrastructure to provide safe and enabling learning environments. Additionally, WIU constructs teachers’ accommodation.

  •      Emergencies often have a profound impact on the mental health and psychosocial well-being of affected individuals, especially children and young people. Thus, WIU recognizes the importance of addressing the psychological well-being of refugees and conflict-affected individuals. It offers psychosocial support services such as counselling, trauma healing, and social integration activities to help individuals recover from the effects of conflict and displacement.

  • We promote comprehensive child protection measures by establishing and strengthening child protection policies and systems within schools. This includes developing child safeguarding guidelines, conducting awareness campaigns on child rights, and training teachers and staff on child protection protocols. We equip teachers to identify vulnerable children for referral to the appropriate child protection or health partner.
